The Cat at the Glasnost Hotel

By William Jack

It's 1989, and the Cold War may be ending. Some very important Soviet officials visit a crumbling building on a block everyone ignores in Leningrad. The building is perfect for a Russian-American joint venture hotel, they decide. They rename the building "The Glasnost Hotel."

Some people don't want the Cold War to end, and they know an assassination is all it would take. They didn't figure on the intervention of Koshka, an old stray cat who lives in the hotel basement and remains hopeful for the future despite all the grumbling of cats and other humans around him. But what can one old cat do?

Koshka learns about the role cats have played in Russian history -- Peter the Great's cat and Catherine the Great's cat and Ivan the Terrible's cat. But just when it looks like he has a chance to change history. . .
